1.1 Extensive and Intensive Reading: Textual Study

Textual study is also called textual analysis or literary analysis. It is a process to examine or interpret texts to understand. It is used to extract and interpret information and ideas present within the text. There are two types of textual reading. These are extensive reading and intensive reading.

1 Extensive reading: Extensive reading is reading broadly and quickly to improve language skills and enjoy reading.

  • a. Purpose: Extensive reading focuses on reading of large quantity of materials. Its main goal is to develop language skills and understanding skills. It is used for pleasure, general understanding, and improving reading speed. Examples are reading fiction, non-fiction, work-related study materials, newspaper, articles, etc.

  • b. Methods:

    • · Readers choose materials that are slightly below their current language level. It ensures smooth reading.

    • · Readers read quickly and aim to understand the main ideas of the text.

    • · Readers skip some details of the text.

    • · Readers focus on enjoying reading the tests not understanding every word and phrase.

  • c. Advantages:

    • · Polish reading ability

    • · Improves language skill

    • · Improves writing skill

    • · Improves reading interest

    • · Improves vocabulary.

2 Intensive reading:

  • a. Purpose: It is a detailed study to understand the text and analyze the content. It is commonly used in academic study. It is used when a deep understanding of the text is required.

  • b. Method: Readers read slowly and carefully. They pay close attention to each word and sentence. They may highlight the key passage and engage in discussion and analysis of the text. The focus is on grasping, examining, and dissecting the text and its meaning.

  • c. Advantages of intensive reading.

    • · Improves the power of expression,

    • · Improves the skill of questioning and answering.

    • · Improves the interest to go into details of the text.

Dr A P Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 as the youngest of five children of a Muslim boat owner named Jainulabudeen and his wife Ashiamma in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. Kalam grew up in humble surroundings and had to take up a job while he was still in school to augment his family's meager income. He distributed newspapers to help his father in providing for the family. He completed his schooling at Ramanathapuram Schwartz Matriculation School and proceeded to study physics at Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, from where he graduated in 1954. He studied aerospace engineering at Madras Institute of Technology.
