Introduction to biochemistry

  • 1.1 Definition and Importance of Biochemistry

Definition

Biochemistry deals with chemical compounds and chemical processes that occur inside living organisms. Clinical biochemistry deals with the examination of body fluids (blood, urine, etc) to measure natural and unnatural components in body fluid.

Importance of biochemistry:

Biochemistry knowledge plays a very important role in medical science.

  • 1. Biochemistry explains the normal physiological functions of living organisms. That keeps living organisms alive.

  • 2. Biochemistry explains metabolic processes inside the living body that generate energy from food,

  • 3. Biochemistry explains the fermentation process that generates several food beverages such as yogurt, pickles, etc.

  • 4. Biochemistry plays a very important role in medical science

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to understand physiological changes within the living body during disease conditions. That helps to diagnose disease

    • · Clinical Biochemistry helps to identify the cause of disease.

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to identify several health conditions such as diabetes, anemia, renal problems, hepatic diseases, etc.

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to determine the severity of disease in living organisms.

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to develop effective medicines and selection of suitable medicines to treat disease conditions in the living body.

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment of disease,

    • · Clinical biochemistry helps to assist the investigation to solve criminal cases.

  • 5. Biochemistry explains living cell communication system,

  • 6. Biochemistry explains genetics,
